Cement Australia Fire Clay 20kg

Cement Australia Fire Clay (20kg) is a fine, natural clay with high alumina and silica content, specifically formulated to withstand high temperatures. It is not a cement or binder on its own, but rather a heat-resistant additive used in fire-related and high-temperature landscaping applications.

LIMITATIONS

Clay should not be considered to be a substitute for Hydrated Lime.

Mortars and renders containing excessive Clay may reduce bond, flexural and compressive strengths while contributing to higher shrinkage in the finished product. To view all product limitations, storage & handling tips please visit cementaustalia.com.au

Uses of Fire Clay

Building Fire Pits

  • Mixed into mortar to line and insulate fire pits.

Pizza Ovens

  • Used in the mortar or render that lines traditional wood-fired pizza ovens.

Barbecues and Smokers

  • Suitable for areas exposed to direct flame or intense heat.

Fireplace Surrounds and Chimneys

  • Used to enhance thermal resistance of masonry work.

Outdoor Ovens or Cooktops

  • Applied in mortars or insulation layers.

Refractory Bricks Production (DIY)

  • Mixed into clay or cement blends to create homemade fire bricks.

How to Use Fire Clay

In Fire-Resistant Mortar

To make a basic fireproof mortar mix:

1 part Fire Clay

1 part Portland cement

1 part lime (optional, for plasticity)

3 parts sand

Add clean water until a workable paste is formed.

Use this mix to lay fire bricks or coat surfaces that will be exposed to heat.

As an Insulating Layer

Combine with perlite or vermiculite for an insulating layer under or behind heat sources like ovens or fire pits.

Any mix designs incorporating Clay as the mix is dependent on the sands used and the sands can vary. It is advisable to trial Clay in the product formulation to ensure that the product performance is appropriate.

Benefits of Fire Clay

High Heat Resistance  Withstands temperatures over 1000°C when properly blended.

Improves Mortar Durability – Reduces cracking and spalling under repeated heating/cooling cycles.

Thermal Insulation – Helps insulate ovens or fire pits, retaining heat effectively.

Versatile – Can be used in traditional refractory mortar, insulation mixes, or oven linings.

Convenient 20kg Size – Ideal for small- to medium-scale outdoor fire-related projects.

Works with Refractory Bricks and Concrete – Enhances fire resistance when used with standard materials.

Natural Material – Non-toxic and safe for use in food-adjacent builds like pizza ovens.
